Thanks to a $28,000 grant, some students at Rockville Elementary School and Turkey Run Elementary School will have expanded learning options.

The students in Mrs. Tori Current’s classroom at Turkey Run Elementary School and many students at Rockville Elementary School have been using Carver and Milo as learning tools. The state-of-the-art robots guide students through lessons to assist them in various social skills lessons. Now they will also be able to incorporate phonics and other language arts skills into their daily lessons as well.

The robot is an added tool as a part of the daily routine, and the students look forward to their time spent completing the lessons that Carver and Milo provide.

Instructional assistants Shawna Crowder and Lisa Keltz-Purcell guide the students in their lessons, which allows the teachers to spend individual time with other students during these sessions.

The robot speaks 20% slower than most people, which allows the student time to process and understand what tasks they need to complete.

The grant was expanded this year to teach phonics based on the Science of Reading.
